As areas of Rome like Trastevere and even Prati become more and more crowded with tourists, travelers begin to branch out from the center and consider other neighborhoods for their stay in the city. Some go to Sallustiano, where we have some properties available (see this, for instance), some to Nomentano or Quartiere Trieste, while others – often returning visitors, but not exclusively – look to Testaccio. It is in this area that our latest acquisition, Testaccio 11, is located.
Across the river from southern Trastevere, Testaccio is one of the most authentic neighborhoods in central Rome, and one of the oldest – although it doesn’t look it!
Continuously inhabited since before the Roman Empire, it was originally the site of the Roman port, and in fact many of the buildings you see around you were built directly over its impressive warehouses.
The core of Testaccio is made up of “social housing” apartment blocks, built in the late 1800s to house workers from the nearby factories or the (still standing, though repurposed) abattoir. Now highly sought after for their location and unique architecture, these once-modest apartments go for hundreds of thousands of euros.
Testaccio 11 is located in one of these highly desirable buildings. Despite its history, you will enjoy the apartment’s modern amenities, from the elevator to the self check-in system, from the smart TV to the independent heating/air conditioning system. The apartment was completely renovated last spring and can accommodate up to four people (it has two double bedrooms). The renovation project aimed to contrast the historic surroundings with a decidedly minimalist interior. At the same time, no detail has been overlooked and the essential needs of a modern traveler have been met.
Outside, Testaccio awaits you – from the famous food market to the contemporary exhibitions or shows in the former abattoir (“Mattatoio”), from the many restaurants to bakeries, grocery stores and laundromats, you’ll enjoy its small-town feel, while being close to many of Rome’s most popular landmarks, including the Colosseum and the Jewish Quarter.
Testaccio 11’s full description can be found here.
